Digital Marketing
As travel demand evolves, hotel marketing is no longer just about visibility—it’s about being discovered where booking decisions are made. This report explores how search, social, and AI are reshaping guest acquisition.
By Shahar Rubin, Co-founder

Hotel display advertising is image, banner and video ads shown on websites, apps, YouTube and Gmail through Google's Display Network, programmatic and travel ad networks, and Meta's placements. It pays off in a few jobs: retargeting people who priced your dates, feeder-market and event pushes, and past guests. Broad prospecting mostly burns budget. Judge display on click-through direct bookings that turned into stays.
Key takeaways
Display earns its keep in four jobs: booking-engine retargeting, feeder-market pushes, event and soft-date pushes, and past guests.
Score it on click-through direct bookings that stayed, at net room revenue. Keep view-through conversions in their own column.
Google is moving Display campaigns into Demand Gen, which has no manual frequency cap as of October 2026.
On a small budget, cover brand search and metasearch before any display.
What counts as hotel display advertising now?
Display ads appear while someone reads, watches or plays something else, so whoever sees yours is not searching for you at that moment. Hotels buy them in four places.
Google's Display Network, now moving into Demand Gen
On May 26, 2026, Google announced that Display Ads has a new home in Demand Gen, where the Display Network's 2 million sites, videos and apps sit next to YouTube, Discover, Gmail and, in beta, Maps. Google expects the move to be complete by 2027.
As of October 2026, Google's migration page shows a migration tool rolling out in phases since June 2026. It lists two steps as coming later: new Display campaigns can be created only in Demand Gen, and the remaining eligible ones move over automatically. Migrated campaigns can't be switched back, and Google says its timelines may change.
If your hotel has its own Hotel Center account linked to Google Ads, Demand Gen can also use your Hotel Center feed to build YouTube ads from your property photos, names and prices.
Programmatic and travel-intent networks
A demand-side platform (DSP) buys programmatic display across many sites at once, while travel-intent networks such as Sojern and Adara use travel data to target people shopping for a trip. Ask where your ads will run before you pay. In Q1 2026, the ANA programmatic benchmark found that only 43.3% of the spend it tracks bought impressions that were fraud-free, measurable, viewable and not on made-for-advertising sites.
Meta placements, the social equivalent
On Meta, display-style inventory means the feed, Stories and Reels on Facebook and Instagram, plus Audience Network, which places Meta ads inside third-party mobile apps. You can't buy Audience Network on its own. Our guide to Facebook ads for hotels covers the setup.
What sizes should hotel banner ads be?
Build hotel banner ads in the sizes Google lists for uploaded display ads: 300x250, 336x280, 728x90, 970x250, 160x600, 300x600, 320x50 and 320x100, as GIF, JPG or PNG files up to 150KB. For campaigns moving to Demand Gen, stick to static JPG or PNG. As of October 2026, Google lists HTML5 banners there as planned for late 2026.
Size | Google's name | What to put in it |
|---|---|---|
300x250 | Inline rectangle | Room photo, one perk, "Book direct" button |
336x280 | Large rectangle | As 300x250, plus the rate or dates |
728x90 | Leaderboard | Logo, rate, dates, button |
970x250 | Billboard | Best wide photo, event name and dates, perk |
160x600 | Wide skyscraper | Stacked photo, rate, perk, button |
300x600 | Half-page ad | Room and view photos, rate, perk, button |
320x50 | Mobile banner | Logo and one line: the perk or the rate |
320x100 | Large mobile banner | Logo, perk, dates, button |
Keep each banner to one offer:
A rate that matches your booking engine, or a perk (breakfast, parking, late checkout) if parity clauses tie your public rate.
The dates, when you push an event or a soft weekend.
Your own room photo. A stock skyline could be any hotel in town.
A "Book direct" link that opens the booking engine on those dates.
With responsive display ads, you upload photos, logos, headlines and descriptions, and Google builds an ad for each slot. Google recommends 1200x628 horizontal, 1200x1200 square and 900x1600 vertical images, 5 to 10 per ratio, with no text over the photo, so put the rate and the perk in the headlines. Google may also add stock images or AI-generated backgrounds, so check its versions against your real rooms. For creative ideas, see these hotel ad examples.
Which hotel display advertising campaigns are worth running?
Hotel display advertising campaigns work when the audience already has a reason to book: they priced your dates, they live in a feeder market, an event is coming, or they stayed with you before. The five campaign types below run from most to least likely to put heads in beds.
Campaign | Goal | Audience | Creative | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Booking-engine retargeting | Win back people who priced dates and left | Booking-engine visitors, minus anyone who booked | The room they viewed, the perk, "Book direct" | Click-through direct bookings that stayed; cost per stayed night |
Feeder-market push | Fill weekends and shoulder nights | Top source markets, plus custom segments from destination keywords | Drive or flight time, a weekend perk | Stayed nights from those markets vs a held-out market |
Event or soft-date push | Lift soft pickup on specific dates | Feeder markets and recent site visitors, timed to your booking window | Event name, dates, rate or package, deadline | Pickup and pace on those dates vs the same time last year |
Past-guest return | Bring guests you already own back direct | Past guests via customer lists, where the platform allows | Welcome-back perk or member rate | Repeat direct bookings and stays moved off the OTA |
Broad prospecting | Reach new travelers | Travel interest or Lookalike segments | Brand photography | Skip it unless a holdout proves incremental stays |

How do you target and cap hotel display ads?
Target by what people did, then where they live, then what they like. A visitor who priced your dates beats any interest segment a platform sells.
Start with your own data. Google keeps visitors in a data segment for 30 days by default and up to 540, and advises matching that to your sales cycle, which for a hotel is the booking window in your PMS. A list needs at least 100 active users in the last 30 days to serve on the Display Network.
Exclude anyone who already booked, so you don't pay to show a confirmed guest the room they reserved.
For feeder markets, use your top source cities from PMS data, plus custom segments built from keywords, URLs and apps.
For past guests, Google's Customer Match policy lets any compliant advertiser use customer lists for exclusions. Targeting those lists takes 90 days of account history and more than $50,000 (USD) in lifetime spend.
Display campaigns let you set a manual frequency cap per person, and only viewable impressions count toward it. As of October 2026, Google says frequency capping isn't supported in Demand Gen, where the system sets frequency itself. After migration, tight audiences and a modest budget do the capping. To check how often people see your ad, divide impressions by unique reach.
On Meta, hard frequency caps exist only for ad sets with a Reach or ThruPlay goal. On conversion campaigns, refresh creative when the frequency column climbs.
What guardrails protect your budget and your brand?
Set three guardrails before launch: a test budget, a kill rule and brand-safety settings.
How much should you spend on a display test?
Spend only what you can afford to lose over one full booking cycle, and write the kill rule down.
Do the break-even math at your ADR. At $150 a night, a $1,000 test needs about 7 stayed nights from guests who would not have come at all, just to cover media.
If display only moves guests from an OTA to direct, each night saves the 18-25% on the month-end OTA invoice, $27 to $37.50, so that $1,000 must shift 27 to 37 nights.
Don't double-buy. Performance Max can already serve on the Display Network, so check its channel performance report before you add a separate display campaign.
How do you keep hotel display ads brand-safe?
Set content suitability (Maximum, Moderate or Limited inventory) at the account level, the only level where Demand Gen accepts it.
Check the "Where ads showed" report weekly and exclude apps and sites that send clicks but no bookings.
On Meta, drop Audience Network if its clicks don't book.
How do you measure hotel display ads in stayed revenue?
Count only click-through direct bookings that became stays, valued at net room revenue, then use a holdout to see how many would not have happened without display. Impressions and view-through conversions only prove that the ads ran.
Click-through vs view-through conversions
A click-through conversion is a booking after someone clicked your ad. A view-through conversion is a booking from someone who saw the ad, didn't click, and booked later, maybe after searching your name. Google's default windows are 30 days after a click and 1 day after a view.
A longer view-through window usually means more view-throughs recorded. In most campaign types, view-through conversions stay in their own column and in "All conversions". In Demand Gen, if you opt a campaign into view-through optimization, which is off by default, they also land in the main "Conversions" column. Segment conversions by "Ad event type" to split them out; view-throughs show as "Impression".
How do you run a holdout test on a small budget?
Google's Conversion Lift needs at least 1,000 observed conversions, a $5,000 minimum campaign budget and a Google account representative. Few independents clear that bar on display, so run a geo holdout:
Pick two feeder markets that sent you similar bookings last year.
Run display in one and keep the other dark for a full booking cycle.
Compare stayed direct room nights from each market against last year.
Treat the gap as what display added. If there is no gap, stop the spend.
Reconcile to stayed revenue
Each month, export display bookings from your booking engine by UTM source, match confirmation numbers to PMS check-outs, drop cancellations and no-shows, and strip taxes and fees. Our guide to tracking hotel ads to stayed revenue covers the setup.
Say a report shows 60 conversions: 42 view-through and 18 click-through. Of the 18, 3 cancelled and 1 no-showed, and the 14 stays averaged 2 nights at $150, or $4,200 in stayed room revenue.
On a $1,500 month, that is $2.80 of stayed revenue per media dollar before the holdout, the number to take to the owner. The platform's ROAS still counts the cancellations and the no-show.
When should a hotel skip display entirely?
Skip display while cheaper, higher-intent channels are uncovered. A guest searching your hotel's name or comparing your rate on Google is closer to booking than anyone a banner can reach. Hold off if:
OTAs bid on your hotel's name and you don't. Fix brand search first.
Your direct rate doesn't show next to the OTAs on Google Hotel Ads and other metasearch sites.
Your booking-engine list is still under Google's 100-active-user minimum.
You can't yet match a booking to a stay.
Every display dollar would come out of brand search or metasearch.
Put money into display once those are covered. The free comp-set snapshot shows your competitors' ad campaigns, pricing and online presence next to yours.
Where Sail fits
Display bills you for impressions or clicks. Sail bills for stays. It runs Google Search ads on your hotel's name and area, Google Hotel Ads and metasearch on Trivago, Tripadvisor and Kayak, and Facebook and Instagram ads for travelers planning a trip, and it funds the ad spend.
You pay only when a guest Sail brought completes a stay: no retainer, no upfront fee, and only net room charges on stayed nights, without tax or add-ons. Some vendors price per booking instead, and a booking can still cancel.
No stay, no pay. Purchase is not the finish line. Stayed revenue is. See how Sail Pay Per Stay works, or book a call.
FAQ
Do display ads work for hotels?
Yes, for narrow jobs: retargeting people who priced your dates, pushing soft dates or events into feeder markets, and reaching past guests. Broad prospecting rarely pays. The proof is click-through direct bookings that stayed, plus a holdout showing they would not have happened anyway.
What is the difference between display ads and Google Hotel Ads?
Google Hotel Ads show your rate next to the OTAs' prices when a traveler searches for hotels with dates. Display shows banners to people reading or watching something else. Hotel Ads catch demand that already exists, while display tries to create it or win it back. Cover Hotel Ads and brand search first.
How do you choose a hotel display ad company?
Ask whether they report click-through and view-through conversions separately, match bookings to stays in your PMS, share the placement report and run a holdout before scaling. Ask who owns the ad account and audiences if you leave. Then ask how they get paid. A retainer or a cut of media spend pays them for activity, whether or not your rooms fill.
What changes when Google Display campaigns move to Demand Gen?
The Display Network becomes one channel in Demand Gen, next to YouTube, Discover, Gmail and, in beta, Maps. As of October 2026, Demand Gen has no manual CPC or frequency caps, and content suitability exclusions work only at the account level. Static banners carry over, HTML5 banners are planned for late 2026, and migrated campaigns can't be switched back. Google expects to finish the move by 2027.
